Some of the new books and one of the educational games made possible by the Ashland Rotary grant have arrived. The girls loved the educational puzzle and immediately started working on it. Each puzzle consists of a single word spelled out and an image of the word. The little ones will be spelling “pato” or duck in no time.
Some of the new books and one of the educational games made possible by the Ashland Rotary grant have arrived. The girls loved the educational puzzle and immediately started working on it. Each puzzle consists of a single word spelled out and an image of the word. The little ones will be spelling “pato” or duck in no time. Each book was carefully chosen for this set of girls. The one in the photograph is of a jealous older brother who steals his younger brother’s pacifier or chupon. Then there is a story of an adorable wombat who sleeps a lot and loves carrots. Not only are the books great for the girls in terms of learning how to read, practicing patience and developing listening skills, and developing fortitude, they’re a wonderful opportunity for volunteers to practice their Spanish, learn tenses, and develop a relationship with the girls using books as vehicles. Everyone wins.

The Rotary Club of Ashland Oregon stopped by Buen Pastor earlier this week to deliver some great news: they've awarded Buen Pastor $6000 USD! We'll be using the money for educational purposes. $300 has been specified to build the library collection. Ashland, Oregon, is Guanajuato's Sister City. Buen Pastor has been very fortunate to have developed a relationship with our Rotarian friends there. Friday's book luncheon was a success! Thanks to the fine ladies of San Miguel de Allende, we now have twenty older girl's books and seventeen younger girl's books in our collection paid for with the donations received. Plans are now in the making to design and build a bookshelf to house the library in the learning lab so that the girls and volunteers have easy access to them. A warm thank you to the people who helped pull this off... you know who you are! New books arrived in the mail this week. Two picture books for the younger girls and a couple of Harry Potters for the older ones. The girls love reading and being read to. A good book is a great gift no matter what age you are. It's heartwarming to see such a great appetite for a good read at Buen Pastor. If you would like to help build our little but very loved library, just go to Amazon, pick something out, and send it to our address located on the Get Involved page. Like many of the girls at Buen Pastor, Sara loves to read. If she had access to a library, she would be in there every afternoon, tucked away in a corner and reading until closing time. Yesterday, she started her first C. S. Lewis: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. She’s never going to want it to end. Our recent Picture Book fund drive was a huge success! Thanks to some very special folks, the library has more than doubled. The girls love to read. They sit in groups and read to one another. Others walk with their books, reading silently to themselves. They go through each one of the books and then start over again. Madre Berta reminds the girls to treat the books with care as they are a treasure. English classes have begun at Buen Pastor. Today, Madre Patty and Madre Catalina practiced pronunciation and reading comprehension using Postsecret. They also deepened their cross cultural understanding thumbing through this incredible book. Olivia the Pig is a big hit at Buen Pastor. The girls can't get enough of her. So far, we have the first book in the series. We hope to get more Olivia books. |
